Have you ever heard about adverse drug reactons or events (ADRs/ADEs) of Chinese Herbal Medicine? In recent years, China's National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) has notified multiple CHM safety events, including CHM-induced kidney and liver injuries and allergies, etc. There are also similar reports in overseas countries, including Minor Radix Bupleuri (Chaihu) in Japan, Rhizoma Coptidis (Huanglian) in Singapore, and ephedra (mahuang) in the U.S.
There is no need to worry or overreact though. In this course, we are going to learn together about how to prevent CHM ADRs/ADEs and help you master the key points to the safe use of Chinese herbal medicine.
Introduction to Safe Use of Chinese Herbal Medicine is the first course offered by TCM universities on rational use of Chinese herbal medicine in China. In 2017, it was awarded the “Excellent MOOC Course” by the Ministry of Education (MOE). Members of the teaching team come from Chinese Herbal Medicine Teaching Team of National and Beijing Municipal Excellence, as well as from Research Center for Pharmacovigilance and Rational Use of Materia Medica at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (BUCM).
Prof. Zhang Bing, head and principal professor of this teaching team, has won numerous titles including Prestigious Teacher of National “Ten Thousand Talents Plan”, Prestigious Teacher of National TCM universities and of Beijing, Outstanding Key Teacher of MOE, National Excellent Scientist and National Expert with Special Allowances from the State Council.
This course starts from basic theories of TCM and CHM, combining with the examples of safe medication in clinical practice and daily life, introduces the related concepts of CHM safety, pharmacovigilance, characteristics and common clinical manifestations of ADRs/ADEs, as well as the assessment, classification, causes, influencing factors of ADRs/ADEs, the safety issues of commonly-used CHM and management of ADRs/ADEs, etc. The objectives of this course are to improve the safety awareness in the use of Chinese herbal medicine, promote the safe and rational use of Chinese herbal medicine, and reduce the occurrence of ADRs/ADEs of Chinese herbal medicine.
