Language reflects how a people perceives and represents the world. This project, by introducing the major frameworks in cognitive linguistics, aims to explore the universals and variations demonstrated in different people’s linguistic representations of the world. Students will familiarize themselves with the major theories in cognitive linguistics, such as categorization, image schema, metaphor and metonymy, iconicity, frame semantics, construction grammar and conceptual integration. This course helps students analyze how Chinese perceives and represents the world by adopting a cross-linguistic perspective, delving into the cognitive pattern of the Chinese people, thus enhancing students’ awareness of the uniqueness and typological significance of the Chinese language.
