《Wonderful Botany》is a general elective course or cultural quality course for all kinds of college students. Class has run about 20 school-years from the begining in 2003 up to now. It is one of the specially general elective courses offered by Southwest University of China.

1. Course content and the necessity of learning

There are 10 chapters with topic prominence in Wonderful Botany. They are introduction, grain plants, energy plants, aromatic plants, medicinal plants, drug plants, invasion of alien species, industrial plants and environmental protection plants, the movement of plants, nomenclature and taxonomic hierarchy of plants, gymnosperms, angiosperms-herbs, angiosperms-shrubs and vines, angiosperms trees (I), angiosperms trees (II),  roots and their metamorphosis, stem and their metamorphosis, leaves and their metamorphosis, ten famous flowers, living fossil plant, symbiosis of plants, dry flower technology and the making of leaf vein bookmark, plant microstructure and its identification significance, basic composition of flowers, Sex and inflorescence of flowers and flowers of cereal plants, flowering pollination and fertilization, fruit formation and structure and Transmission of fruits and seeds. The course teach students some basic knowledge and theories related to botany and share interesting plant biological phenomena. The course relate some outstanding achievements of excellent scientists with great social impact.

This course is a public elective courses for college student or other learners. Entering the wonderful world of Botany, you will hear the life rhythm, sense the time conversion and reveal the mystery of plants, understand the wonder of life, and gain rich plant knowledge. The text book adopted is the 《Wonderful Botany》 edited by Xiaohong Yang and Chunhua Wang. It was published by Southwest Normal University Press in 2007.
