Coverage includes in-depth study of: (i) the structure of organic compounds and the functional groups (bonding, acid-base properties, nomenclature, conformations, stereochemistry), and (ii) the synthesis and reactivity (including detailed mechanisms) of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, halides, alcohols, ethers, epoxides, sulfides and biomolecules (lipids, carbohydrates, proteins, and nucleic acids). Laboratory experiments are related to topics covered in lectures and emphasize organic laboratory techniques, synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of organic molecules.
In lecture, students are given:
Lecture quizzes, and homework assignments - 10% of final grade
A two-hour comprehensive final exam - 80% of final grade
In laboratory, students will be evaluated based on their performance on:
Lab reports, and/or assessments of lab practice - 10% of final grade
