Veterinary Parasitology is a compulsory and core course of the Veterinary Medicine, Animal and Plant Quarantine and other related majors. This course is mainly composed two parts: one is the introduction about the morphology, classifications, biology and ecology of various ectoparasites and endoparasites of domestic and wild animals, and another is the delivery knowledge of the epidemiology, clinical symptoms, pathogenesis, immunology, diagnosis, prevention and treatment technology of parasitic diseases. The parasitic disease is one of the national statutory animal diseases and its learning also constructs one of examination contents of the National Veterinary Licensing Examination. Moreover, Veterinary Parasitology is the essential knowledge for undergraduates whose major is Veterinary Medicine, because their studying will contribute to animal health breeding and prevention and control of animal parasitic diseases in future careers, also such major knowledge and skills are necessary for licensed veterinarian so that they can better guide animal husbandry production, human health and promotion of public health, etc.
Through learning the course Veterinary Parasitology, students can understand the harms the parasitic diseases pose to animals correctly and master basic theoretical knowledge of veterinary parasitology and its diagnosis and treatment technologies, so that they can protect animals from parasitic infections and threats, minimize the economic loss by parasites, and ensure healthy development of animal husbandry. At the same time, students could also carry out rescue work and make contributions to protect biodiversity of wildlife. Moreover, by mastering epidemiology, diagnosis technology, and measures of prevention and control of parasitic zoonoses, students could learn how to interrupt transmission and prevalence of zoonotic parasitiasis and therefore provide a reliable guarantee of human health.
Veterinary Parasitology is a comprehensive discipline based on multidisciplinary knowledge. The knowledge of biology, veterinary anatomy, veterinary histology, veterinary epidemiology, veterinary immunology, veterinary pathology, veterinary clinical diagnostics and veterinary pharmacology all should be mastered before taking this course.
