课程概述

Poultry meat and eggs are among the most common and affordable animal source food consumed at global level, across a wide diversity of cultures, traditions and religions, making a substantial contribution to food security. Growth of the poultry industry has created the need for scientific, technical and business knowledge in the various fields important to successful poultry production. This course offers an online learning platform aimed at professionals and students with animal-related backgrounds keen to acquire in-depth knowledge and skills in modern poultry production.

The course contents are mainly tailored for undergraduates majoring in animal science, and are also suitable for students in veterinary medicine, biological science, as well as professionals who are likely to already work in the poultry industry. This course consists of 66 video lessons with 5 to 20 minutes per lesson in a span of 10 weeks. There are 7 chapters covering overview of modern poultry industry, poultry biology, breeding, hatchery and management of egg- and meat-type poultry at different physiologic stages. Every week, students should go through the video lessons and complete chapter tests and homework. Students could take part in lesson-related discussion delivered by teachers, submit queries and interact with teachers and other students in discussion areas. In the end of term student could take part in final examination. Overall assessment for learning quality will be achieved by integrating evidence from video-watching record, score of unit tests and homework and the number of replies in discussion section. Students are expected to acquire poultry production-related knowledge and skills required for the management of complex production units and rewarding career. 

Graduates of this course are expected to acquire knowledge of poultry physiology, breeding, reproduction, hatchery, nutrition, environmental science etc. and develop analytical and problem-solving skills. They will be qualified for positions in management and technical support in complex production units, processing and marketing of poultry products and feed, pharmaceutical and equipment companies, poultry-related research institute and government department.


授课目标

By learning, undergraduates are expected to know overview of domestic and foreign poultry industry, production purposes and performance of major breeds, and to master basic knowledge about poultry biology and skills in feeding and management of laying and broiler chickens at different physiological stages. They will be well qualified for jobs in poultry-related company or research institute, or relevant government department.

Students that are going to learn this course are required to acquire knowledge from animal nutrition, animal reproduction, domestic animal anatomy, livestock environment hygiene and animal breeding.
