About this course

If you want to make scientific decisions based on a big amount of stochastic data processing, you need to master some important tools for quantitative analysis of random phenomena. Probability theory and mathematical statistics is a mathematical discipline, focused on studing the statistical law of random phenomena, which has been widely applied to economic, society, management, finance, biology, environment, transportation  and other fields. Therefore, probability theory and mathematical statistics is not only an important basic common course in college, but also a practical and highly applied subject for whose is major in statistics and mathematics. In the mathematical modeling contest for college students such as MCM/ICM, statistics is also the basic  contest to support data analysis.

Objectives

Probability and mathematical statistics is a mathematical discipline that studies the quantitative rules of uncertain phenomena. This course is one of the important basic common courses for undergraduate student. The course is consisted by two parts: probability theory and mathematical statistics. The probability theory includes random events and probabilities, random variables and distributions, numerical characteristic, laws of large numbers and central limit theorem. The mathematical statistics includes basic concepts of statistics, parameter estimation, hypothesis testing, and linear regression. The course will teach you the statistical thinkings and methods to deal with random problems, and build the ability of applying probabilistic knowledge to solve practical problems in your major fields. And the course also cultivate a concrete theoretical oundation for your future study of major courses.
