About this course

Obstetrics and gynecology is a main course for medical students, in line with internal medicine, surgery and pediatrics. It is a clinical discipline with strong independence and wide range of involvement which includes obstetrics, gynecology, family planning and reproductive medicine. Obstetrics specializes in the study of physiology and pathophysiology related to women's pregnancy. It touches on the physiological phenomena, psychological and pathological changes of women in pregnancy, childbirth and puerperium, as well as the diagnosis and treatment of physiological and pathological changes of the fetus. Obstetrics is divided into general obstetrics, maternal medicine and fetal medicine. Gynecology is a discipline specialized in the study of physiology and pathophysiology of women's reproductive system in nonpregnancy state. It includes the basis of gynecology, inflammation of female genitalia, tumors of female genitalia, reproductive endocrinology, lesions of female genitalia and pelvic floor dysfunction, deformity of female genitalia and other diseases. Family planning and reproductive medicine mainly study female fertility regulation, including contraception, sterilization, eugenics and assisted reproduction.

Although obstetrics and gynecology can be divided into four parts i.e. obstetrics, gynecology, family planning and reproductive medicine, they share the same foundation. Many gynecological diseases can be caused by obstetric problems, and gynecological diseases can also affect the normal process of obstetrics. Therefore, we should not only master the characteristics of each branch subject, but also take obstetrics and gynecology as a whole. The physiological and pathological changes of women are closely related to other systems as well.

Through the study of this course, students can master the development and progression of common diseases in gynecology and obstetrics, the diagnosis and treatment plan, the clinical thinking method of dignosis for difficult and miscellaneous diseases, the procedure and method for critical diseases, and the new theory and technology of gynecology and obstetrics. In the teaching, students are required to master the basic theory, skills and knowledge of obstetrics and gynecology. The teaching team is committed to training comprehensive and specialized clinical, teaching and research talents.
