Soil Mechanics is the mandatory core class at the School of Civil Engineering for the third-year undergrad students majoring in civil engineering. The main objectives of the course are to equip students with fundamental principles and methods related to soil mechanics, develop their prerequisite skills to conduct foundation design, and prepare them for engineering practice or academic research. The course covers eight chapters: (1) basic properties of soils, (2) water flow in soil, (3) stresses in soil, (4) compressibility and settlement, (5) shear strength of soil, (6) earth pressure, (7) slope analysis, and (8) bearing capacity of foundation.
The course is to equip students with fundamental principles and methods related to soil mechanics, develop their prerequisite skills to conduct foundation design, and prepare them for engineering practice or academic research.
It will be helpful if you’ve taken engineering mechanics, mechanics of deformable bodies, elasticity, or related courses.
