课程概述

This course is designed for the second-year undergraduates from two colleges in Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, i.e., College of Aeronautical Engineering and College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.

This course is an introduction to the principles of materials science. It will introduce students to the language, nomenclature, and tools of crystallography and demonstrate how structure determines properties in a variety of materials systems. Topics will include bonding, atomic arrangements, and crystal structures of materials; defects in solids; mechanical properties of solids; phase diagram and phase transformation; relationship between processing, microstructure and properties of materials.

This course will also teach students some typical experimental methodsfor predicting and evaluating the effects of processing on the microstructure & mechanical properties of materials.

授课目标

We aim to provide a fundamental understanding of the composition-structure-property relations of a variety of materials that are formed through the process of  different heat treatments.
