Climate change has become a common concern for all mankind. As one of the main industries consuming fossil fuels, shipping also accounted for nearly 3% of global anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions each year. In recent years, the international maritime industry has actively promoted decarbonization in the shipping industry, setting a strategic goal of achieving carbon neutrality in shipping by the mid-21st century.
The main content of this course includes: Shipping emissions and their regulatory framework; Technical measures to improve ship energy efficiency; Operational measures to improve ship energy efficiency; Clean energy and power for ships; Alternative fuels for ships; Alternative fuel engines and systems; Ship emission post-treatment technology. Through the study of this course, students will be able to systematically and comprehensively learn and master the basic concepts, development status, regulatory framework, and various potential technological pathways of shipping decarbonization. They will gain basic knowledge in the conception and design, equipment and system, operation and management of shipping decarbonization. Furthermore, this course will help promote better career development for students and industry practitioners in related fields such as shipbuilding, shipping, and ports.
This course is also part of the course series of zero emission shipping, along with “Zero Emission Shipping Management” and “Zero Emission Shipping Policies and Practice”. The teaching team of this course comes from internationally renowned maritime universities such as Dalian Maritime University in China, Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) in the UK, and the University of Plymouth in the UK. The lecturers have profound academic and industry practical backgrounds. The cutting-edge and expansive nature of the teaching content, as well as the academic and practical nature of the teaching team, provide comprehensive support and guarantee for the future development of global maritime professionals.
Against the backdrop of decarbonization and green transformation in shipping sector, this course will help promote better career development for students and industry practitioners in related fields such as shipbuilding, shipping, and ports, and ultimately accelerate the achievement of decarbonization and green transformation goals in international shipping.
